Are you one of them?
Installation im Rahmen der Ausstellung Dialog mit Peter Spillmann, Marion von Osten und Renée Green
Swiss Institute, New York 2000

It's a new rush. It's not just another period of prospering economy, but a change of paradigms called "the New Economy", an ambiguous hype. Showing an image of great fun and the promise of quick success, it brings troubles to broad areas of society. The media is full of promotions for Internet technology, e-commerce, and all kinds of "e-solutions" for a "better world". It‘s no longer just another nice story about the Internet - it's real work now. Until now the commercialization of the Internet was always the, more or less abstract, concept of some global players somewhere in the future. Now it's happening, and we are approached personally. A whole generation is being pushed into web professions, from repetitive html jobs to start-up activities - everybody has to take a risk or believe in their chance.
It's not at all a revolution, it‘s constantly explained to us, – it's simply the replacement of an old industry and not much more. The whole concept of society, the results of years of political struggles and fights and personal experiences, is being replaced in a few moments.

But do we really want to be those young, active, creative and positive types, as aggressively advertised in all the media, highly skilled and most sought after by all those fast, new enterprises.
Among all the "new Gründerzeit " myths, one aspect is most provoking: the fantasy of good and fair business for everybody, and for the whole planet, as well as the almost totalitarian approach, with economic principles for all aspects of our lives. Why should being a company be a good idea? Why should becoming a professional solve all our problems, and why should economism be an appropriate philosophical model to explain the world?

The installation "are you one of them" takes place in the space between image and information. Collected footage from recent advertising, and articles from various magazines, provide a framework for an interactive discussion forum, where theorists, activists and artists are invited to post articles and manifestos about the new developments in the economy and their impact on social and cultural life. The forum will develop over three months, while the institutional context of SI/NY is used for a kind of "campaign" to promote it.
